As this exchange highlights, international broadcasters are generally perceived as providing reliable, well-researched, and often balanced news content—a perception that was shared by those who regularly access international broadcasters across the markets.

Our research suggests that access costs, the language used to broadcast, and a perceived low need to receive international news were the most frequently cited factors as to why participants from the middle and lower socioeconomic classes said they would not access international broadcasters more frequently. As two middle-aged respondents in Dakar from a low socioeconomic background explained:

Respondent: There is the issue of inaccessibility. The majority of the population can’t enjoy foreign providers. People don’t have the means to pay for these channels. You have to subscribe to Canal to view France 24, for example.

Respondent: There is a problem of language; they don’t speak our national languages.
